Care needs to be taken to avoid over-planting a garden with fast growing trees and shrubs.

Our client in Harrow had a garden that had been over-planted by the previous occupant. What once was a decent-sized plot had become almost a woodland setting over time rather than a neatly kept back garden.

T’s Trees were contracted to clear the site of most of the vegetation, leaving just a few of the nicer trees at the far end of the garden, along with several fruit trees.

As can be seen from the above image, even the garden boundaries weren’t clear before work commenced, and a fair amount of crawling through the undergrowth had taken place during the quotation stage to ensure we knew exactly what we were getting ourselves in for.

There was a large selection of different trees to be removed. All waste was removed from site as well as stumps ground out ready for the customer to landscape the garden.

Removal of the trees also exposed a very aged fence which was replaced with a brand new one by specialist fencing and landscaping contractors Greenscape Gardening.

Popular for their fast rate of growth and providing a thick screen for privacy.

Another day, another conifer hedge reduction, this time in Hemel Hempstead. Leylandii hedgerows are probably one of the most popular hedges we come across mostly due to their cost and growth rate. However, the downside to this is the amount of maintenance they require to keep it in good condition. To achieve a nice hedge they ideally need trimming on a yearly basis. Any more than this will result in a hedge that quickly becomes too large for its space. Unlike other hedging species, Leylandii cannot be cut back hard on the sides, so once a wider hedge has established itself you will find yourself having to maintain it at this same width.

A fast growing tree such as a Eucalyptus can quickly become a nuisance.

This large eucalyptus tree was quickly outgrowing its space. The owners hadn’t appreciated just how fast this species grew when they originally planted it. Eucalyptus is a broadleaved tree that retains its leaves all year round. This along with its striking bark makes it quite a popular choice with homeowners and can be found frequently in back gardens throughout the UK.

Fast-growing trees can be a blessing at times when a quick screen is needed, but in the majority of smaller UK gardens, it can quickly become a drain on finances due to the maintenance required to keep this species of tree at a manageable size. The regrowth you would typically expect following pruning will always grow quicker than the original growth. Therefore any pruning work begins an ongoing cycle of maintenance. We would advise against planting Eucalyptus unless the tree is in a larger garden, or in a space where it can otherwise be left to grow to its natural size.
